How to Be an Ally (Online)
Even the most well-intentioned allies unintentionally engage in practices that undermine their allyship. This online program pinpoints some of the most common mistakes that people commit and the most common virtues they fail to enact. Through this session, you will learn how to deepen your inclusion efforts in the most authentic ways. Through reflection, journaling, and group discussions, you will learn to write your allyship autobiography and practice creating equity and inclusion in ways that make for more impactful allies.
Included in the program is attendance at the three-day How to Be an Ally Virtual Summit. This immersive, interactive experience will help you learn a healthy, positive framework for talking about and taking action on racial equity in the workplace. Through large and small group discussions, reflective journaling, and networking, you’ll discover how to recognize privilege, acknowledge bias, understand microaggressions, practice conscious equity, and learn to talk about race.
Attendance at the How to Be an Ally Virtual Summit is required to complete this elective and the cost of the summit is included in the program fee. Registration information will be sent to participants after enrolling in the program. After the summit, participants will engage in three additional sessions with instructors Deanna Singh and Dr. Justin Ponder to further explore concepts addressed at the summit and create personal action plans.

Deanna Singh is a business consultant, speaker, and podcaster who is internationally recognized for her work in leadership, diversity, equity, and inclusion. Deanna helps her clients create more equitable and inclusive work environments and engage more authentically within their internal and external communities.
A gifted communicator, she is a champion for marginalized communities through her work. Her podcast, “Uplifting Impact” with a focus on looking at the intersection of leadership and diversity, equity, and inclusion, focuses on solutions and is directed at people who want to break the status quo.
Deanna earned her Bachelor of Arts in urban studies from Fordham University, a J.D. from Georgetown University, a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and certification in diversity, equity, and inclusion from Cornell University.
Justin Ponder is a professor who teaches courses on ethnic studies, African-American studies, and ethnic minority literature. He has been published in numerous journals and books on the issue of race and identity politics, exploring ways to bridge the gap between who we are and who we must become to achieve a more equitable world for others.
He has helped organizations and leaders consider connections between the historical past, the social present, and a more just future. He knows how to masterfully weave the academic with the practical and the political with the personal so people can better appreciate the complexity of the issues while finding clarity about their responsibilities. In his work on diversity, equity, and inclusion, he is known for his ability to teach difficult lessons in gentle ways that combine heartbreak and humor to inspire hope.
Justin has a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee.
